Shutdowns vs. Meltdowns

Shutdowns look like withdrawal; meltdowns look like overwhelm. Both signal a nervous system at capacity. Silence and stillness don’t mean a child is “fine”—they might be frozen.
Offer space without abandoning: “I’m nearby if you need me.” Provide grounding tools: weighted blankets, dim lights, slow breathing. Later, revisit gently—not as interrogation but as connection.
Teaching kids that shutdowns aren’t shameful helps them come back sooner and safer.
