How to be a Good Friend

Writer: Allison McCue-NapoliAllison McCue-Napoli

1. Listen Actively

  • Give your full attention when your friend talks.

  • Avoid interrupting and make them feel heard and valued.

  • Ask questions to show you care about their thoughts and feelings.

2. Be Supportive

  • Celebrate their successes and comfort them during tough times.

  • Offer encouragement when they need it, but also be honest when necessary.

3. Communicate Openly

  • Share your feelings and thoughts with them, and encourage them to do the same.

  • Be honest but kind, even when discussing complex topics.

4. Respect Boundaries

  • Understand and honor their needs, whether time, space, or privacy.

  • Don't take it personally if they need alone time or are unavailable.

5. Be Reliable

  • Keep your promises and show up when they need you.

  • Trust and dependability form the foundation of a strong friendship.

6. Practice Forgiveness

  • No one is perfect. Be willing to forgive mistakes and work through conflicts.

  • Talk things out instead of holding grudges.

7. Be Present in Their Life

  • Make time for them, even during your busy periods.

  • Check-in with them regularly, even with a simple text or call.

8. Celebrate Them

  • Notice the little things they do and express appreciation.

  • Celebrate milestones, birthdays, or just everyday wins.

9. Accept Them as They Are

  • Appreciate their individuality, quirks, and imperfections.

  • Avoid trying to change them; instead, support them in becoming their best self.

10. Have Fun Together

  • Share laughter and positive experiences.

  • Create memories by doing things you both enjoy.

Good friendships grow with effort and care over time. What do you think makes a good friend?
