The 90-Second Rule for Emotional Waves

Emotions rise and fall in waves. Most peak and settle within 90 seconds if they are allowed to move through. When we suppress or judge feelings, the wave lingers. When we notice and breathe, emotions complete their cycle.
This concept helps kids and adults alike because it reframes emotional intensity as temporary—not dangerous. Instead of forcing calm, guide awareness: “Let’s ride this wave together. It won’t last forever.”
Movement helps emotion release: a walk, shaking out hands, squeezing a pillow, or taking breaths with longer exhales. The goal isn’t to stop emotion—it’s to allow it to flow without shame.
Humans don’t need to be rescued from their feelings; they need presence during the wave. The wave ends—connection remains.
